How Hinge Health Saved $1M+ Annually on Their Claims Data Platform with Tuva

By choosing Tuva's open-source healthcare data transformation platform with Enterprise Support, Hinge Health avoided more than $1 million in annual analytics infrastructure costs while giving its data team a better claims data platform: one they fully control, understand, and operate inside their own Databricks environment.

Results at a Glance

  • $1M+ saved annually compared with traditional healthcare and claims analytics vendors
  • Dozens of claims data sources live in Tuva today, expanding to hundreds in 2026 across medical claims, pharmacy claims, and eligibility data
  • Full control and transparency over every data transformation, with Tuva running inside Hinge Health's Databricks environment

The Challenge: Scaling Claims Analytics Without Losing Control

Hinge Health helps employers and health plans reduce musculoskeletal pain, avoid unnecessary utilization, and lower the cost of care through a digital-first MSK solution. Claims data is central to that mission.

Employers and health plans share claims data with Hinge Health so the team can identify people who may benefit from care, understand patterns of utilization, and measure ROI through lower cost of care and avoided high-cost events such as emergency department visits, inpatient admissions, surgeries, imaging, and other expensive services.

As Hinge Health has continued to scale, their data challenge has become more complex. Every new employer or health plan relationship brought a new set of claims files, formats, definitions, coding patterns, eligibility structures, refresh cadences, and data quality questions. The team needed a way to transform many heterogeneous claims sources into one trusted analytics foundation.

Hinge Health started evaluating traditional healthcare and claims analytics vendors and quickly realized the cost would be significant: more than $1 million annually and potentially multiple millions of dollars per year as the company scaled. Traditional platforms also created a deeper strategic concern: If the transformation layer lived inside a proprietary vendor system, Hinge Health would not fully control the logic, the platform, or the long-term economics of its own claims analytics infrastructure.

For Hinge Health, that was not just a technology decision. The company needed claims analytics to power core business workflows, customer reporting, high-risk member identification, and ROI measurement. Locking that foundation inside a black-box vendor platform would make the data team dependent on a third party for a capability that was becoming increasingly strategic.

How Hinge Health Discovered Tuva

Around the same time Hinge Health was evaluating traditional vendors, their data science team discovered Tuva's open-source healthcare data platform.

At first, Tuva offered an alternative to an expensive vendor purchase. But as the team looked more closely, they realized Tuva was not just cheaper. It had the core capabilities Hinge Health needed from a healthcare analytics transformation layer: a common data model, an advanced set of claims groupers including service categories and encounters, detailed financial analytics marts, risk models and metrics, robust data quality testing throughout the transformation process, and data assets including terminology sets, reference datasets, and value sets.

The difference was control.

Tuva runs inside Hinge Health's own Databricks environment. That means Hinge Health can see how raw claims data becomes analytics-ready tables. The team can inspect the code, understand the logic, adapt transformations when needed, and build analytics directly on top of a model they own. Instead of sending strategic data workflows into a proprietary platform, Hinge Health could keep the transformation layer inside its own cloud.

Hinge Health also selected Tuva's Enterprise Support offering, which gives the team strict SLAs around bug fixes, training, and advisory support to make sure its data team is successful using Tuva. Enterprise Support gives Hinge Health a backstop for production use, while preserving the control and transparency that made Tuva attractive in the first place.

The open-source model also changed the long-term relationship with Tuva. Hinge Health is not locked into Tuva as a vendor. If Hinge Health ever decided to stop working with Tuva Health, it would still have the open-source code, the data model, the transformation logic, and the internal knowledge built around the platform.

That is a fundamentally different model from traditional healthcare analytics vendors. With a proprietary system, leaving the vendor means completely starting over and rebuilding the platform from scratch. With Tuva, Hinge Health gets expert support from the team behind the project while preserving ownership of the foundation it is building on.

As Hinge Health evaluated Tuva more deeply, the team found that the platform was mature enough for its needs and aligned with how its data organization wanted to work: transparent, cloud-native, extensible, and controlled by the team operating it.

The Outcome: A Successful Platform Built to Scale

In 2025, Hinge Health chose Tuva as its common data model and transformation layer for payer claims data. Today, dozens of claims and eligibility data sources flow through Tuva inside Hinge Health's Databricks instance.

The initiative has been successful inside Hinge Health because it solved the business problem and the data team problem at the same time. The company avoided more than $1 million in annual infrastructure costs, while the data team gained a platform that is faster, more transparent, and easier to control than the proprietary alternatives it evaluated.

With Tuva, Hinge Health has accelerated claims analytics by 10x. Analysts and data scientists can build against a common claims model instead of rebuilding logic for each new employer or health plan dataset. That improves speed, consistency, and trust across high-risk member identification, cost-of-care analysis, utilization measurement, and ROI reporting.

"Tuva has been amazing in accelerating our ability to deliver high-quality ROI analysis to the business. There was no other solution on the market that could meet our needs for control and transparency, especially given that this is such a core strategic capability for Hinge Health." – Jingwen Li, Product Manager, Hinge Health

The team is now doubling down. In 2026, Hinge Health plans to expand from dozens of claims data sources flowing through Tuva to hundreds. That growth would be difficult to support if every new dataset required a bespoke analytics foundation or a vendor-controlled implementation. With Tuva, each new dataset can move toward the same transparent, analytics-ready model inside Hinge Health's cloud.

For Hinge Health, Tuva has become more than a way to save money. It is a better operating model for healthcare analytics infrastructure: open source at the core, commercially supported when needed, fully transparent to the data team, and running inside the cloud environment Hinge Health already controls.
